Why it may be good news if your cat wakes you up at 4am in the morning

15 March, 2010

Some of you cat lovers may already have come across my post on why your cat wakes you up at 4am in the morning.

(Judging by the number of comment I’ve had, it’s one of the more popular posts on this blog!)

Recently Naomi Harris of New York wrote in.  She’d rescued a cat out of a neighbour’s bush almost a month ago – the little kitty started following her.  She left food out for the little kitty, and you can imagine the rest of the story as kitty found a home … .

The story doesn’t end there. The kitty started waking her up several times a night by sticking her nose up her owner’s nose.

I made the usual suggestions, i.e. putting her in her own room, maybe leaving food out for her in case she was hungry and woke her owner up to be fed. I asked if anything had changed since she’d rescued the kitty.

In most cases it’s hard to stop a kitty from waking its owner up once they get into that habit. And most owners love their cats too much to want to stop sharing their beds with them.

This story has a wonderful ending, though.

Just last week, I received an e-mail from Naomi, with a video, entitled “It’s a boy”.

Turns out that one night, Naomi woke up and her kitty had had a kitten on the bed.

Yes, the reason the kitty had started the habit of waking her up is because she must have felt maternal because she was due to kitten!

(it makes sense because when the week my queen is due to kitten, she gets very cuddly and wants to curl up with me).

So, folks when your cat wakes you up at 4am in the morning, don’t groan … it could lead to a pleasant surprise!

(Many thanks to Naomi and MBB the kitty for allowing me to share this wonderful heart-warming story and kitten photos with you.

She’s taken these great kitten photos too!  One … two … three … awwwww).
